You must have a visa to visit Jordan. For most tourist trips a single-entry visa can be bought on arrival, so the embassy route matters mainly if you need a multiple-entry visa or another visa type.
The Embassy of Jordan in London states that passport and travel document holders of all nationalities can only apply online for an electronic visa, through the Ministry of Interior web services at eservices.moi.gov.jo.

Note. If you are entering Jordan using the King Hussein / Allenby Bridge you must get your visa before you travel. Travellers on non-British passports may also need to pre-book the crossing with the Jordan Express Tourist Transport Company.
